Since May 2014[update], the company has been wholly owned by the Qatari government.  Qatar Airways has been fully controlled by the government since July 2013 (2013-07), after a former foreign minister and other shareholders bought a 50% stake.  As of March 2019, Qatar Airways employed more than 45,000 people, 32,000 of whom worked directly for the airline.  Qatar Airways is the largest shareholder in International Airlines Group (IAG), with 25.1% of the shares.  Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways Group, explained how this measure will benefit the airline`s passengers. He indicated that there would be better connectivity for travellers between Canada and people like Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Qatar Airways Club Privilege`s loyalty program has mutual agreements with Middle East Airlines, Royal Air Maroc and Gol Transportes Aéreos.  In May 2007 (2007-2005), Qatar Airways and Airbus signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the acquisition of 80 Airbus A350 XBs, including 20 A350-800s and 40 and 20 -900 and 1000 aircraft, the first to be delivered in 2013.  The agreement was reached in June at the 2007 Paris Air Show;  Three other Airbus A380s were also awarded to the contract.  In July of the same year, at the Investigation Ceremony of the Boeing 787 in Everett, Qatar Airways was recognized as a future customer for this type when its logo appeared on one side of the brand new aircraft.
At this stage, the company had not confirmed that it had ordered a number of these new aircraft.  In November of the same year, a firm order for 30 Boeing 787-8s and options for 35 other -9 or -10 aircraft were confirmed. The order also included 14 Boeing 777-300ERs, six Boeing 777-200LRs and seven Boeing 777Fs, while five other type aircraft were available. The total contract was valued at $13.5 billion.   At the end of November 2007 (2007-11), the airline took delivery of its first 335-seat Boeing 777-300ER.  The network continued to grow in 2007 with the arrival of Newark in June Nagpur – the company`s seventh destination in India – in September and Stockholm in November.  A new scheduled service to New York-JFK, which began in November 2008 (2008-2011), replaced the Newark Highway.  The first two Boeing 777-200LRs were delivered by the aircraft manufacturer in February 2009 (2009-2002). In 2015, they bought 9.99% of the International Airlines Group.
Since then, Qatar has continued to increase its stake and held 25.1% of the shares in February 2020.  Qatar Airways has been serving Canada since the summer of 2011.
